Sam And Saundra's Second Time Around - Part 51

Sam And Saundra’s Second Time Around – Part 51
Canada
6/21/11, 6/22/11, 6/23/11 – Dezadeash Lake, Kluane Lake Area

Another short drive day to Dezadeash (Dez Dee Ash) Lake on the Haines Highway (see previous journal).  On the way, we stop and take the hike around the Million Dollar Falls.  Very impressive! Porcupines, bears, eagles, moose. More Pictures. Then Dezadeash Lake. Love it! Love it! Love It!  Private, sandy/pebbly lake beach with butterflies and plenty of space to practice casting.  Enjoy our selves immensely. The view is incredible. Drove the highway in photo safari mode. Played on the beach. Chased butterflies. Enjoy the sunshine until we give out around midnight. We have to back-track to Haines Junction to reconnect to the Alaska Highway, and we do.  Still a ways to go.

Owen Staking His Claim To Dezadeash Lake

We turn left and just before Kluane Lake (an even more hugendous lake), we see a giganticosis grizzly bear on the rampage.  It was coming our way and none of the brush it was stomping though had any effect on his stride.  He was UPSET! A bicyclist appeared to be a little pale – probably the thin air.  We watched until it crossed the road behind us – giving Sam a nasty look and toss of his head.  Then we took off in the opposite direction – luckily that was the way we were going anyway.  We just love traveling and Owen seems to be having a good time too.

Not The Grizzly

We pass Destruction Bay and stop at Edith Creek long enough for Owen to catch six Arctic Graylings.  Sam and I looked on in envy since we did not have fishing licenses for the Yukon. We set up camp at Lake Creek and run him over to Pickhandle Lake.  Sure enough, he sees seagulls, eagles and catches his first pike.  What a kid! He is fishing on his own!  Even more s’mores and card games.  Owen wants to keep going as it is not getting dark at all.  We put our dark window covers on and call it quits for the ‘night’.  We recount the large number of animals we have seen on the way up.  Black bears and moose of all shapes and sizes, porcupine, eagles, ravens, seagulls of all types, blue jays, elk, buffalo, beaver, swans, fish and even the chicken tree. So many that we have lost count – except -only one rampaging grizzly.
