Sam And Saundra’s
Second Time Around – Part 57
Alaska
7/9/11- To Kenai River,
Soldotna
The trip to Soldotna is
pretty easy. The roads are goodish and road construction is at a minimum
this year. We make the trip in one day. This stretch of road is
sooooo beautiful. Like most of Alaska, if you can see it the first time
in sunshine - the views will astound you. After that, the area will be
stuck in your memory and you will be able to forgive it later if the sun goes
missing. On the other hand – if you try to see it’s beauty for the first
time through rain, or a storm, or possibly a very heavy forest fire smoke – you
will miss a large chunk of the heart of Alaska and will probably not want to
return. Whole mountain ranges, complete with glacial cover, are lost during
smugly weather. Even the animals usually have the sense to get under
cover. What is left to see is not always breath-taking.

Our trip this time is
as beautiful as the last and we are amazed, considering ourselves
blessed. We see glaciers, the usual black bear, moose and add more
mountain sheep to our list. We pass through Anchorage, down the side of
the ‘bay’, but do not see any Beluga whales as we pass their designated part of
Cook Inlet. We turn right at the right junction, missing Seward and head
towards Homer. We start to recognize some of our fishing grounds.
After finding a place to give Brutus and the trailer a much-needed shower, we
quickly make it to Soldotna. We set up camp for a nice long stay at the
Edgewater RV Park. As soon as we can, we are all down at the side of this
large, jewel green river. A few people are already in place, kerplunking
that hook/yarn/sinker combo into the water – trying to irritate those
Reds. We are anxious to take our places, but decide dinner, cards and a
little sleep is of value too. Especially since it appears that the Reds
did not get our invitation and are late coming to the party.
