Sam And Saundra’s Second
Time Around – Part 69
Alaska
8/3/11 – Kenai River to
Susitna River
It started raining. The
cold was annoying. As a part of the fish oil magic, if the salmon are
running, the weather is not felt. So I blame the salmon. Why aren’t
they running and how can salmon run anyway? Since they aren’t and we can, we
decide to start for home. Our total lack of pre-planning allows us to seek more
fish at another location and see more things we have not yet seen. Good
plan. Besides, our trailer space had become so water soaked, we were calling it
Lake Wedge and they had to pile gravel near our doorway so we could get to
Brutus without wearing hip boots.

We packed up and
started for home, which does not mean we started south. Along with my
other challenges, I find myself directionally challenged in Alaska. We
head for the Susitna River, near Wasilla, near the turn for Denali Park.
We keep our eyes peeled for animals, but the clouds were just too low. How
low? Not only were the tops of the mountains dry, but most of the middle
and all of the glaciers. At least that is what I believe, and Sam could
not prove otherwise.

Seems strange that we
are on our own. Owen and all the friends we ran into up here spoiled us. We
pull into Willow Creek State Park and choose space #1. Away from other
campers. We are able to use our generator longer to keep our treasure
frozen. Willow Creek joins the Susitna River here and is a good fishing
destination. I pick the remaining amount of Fireweed blossoms needed for jelly
and Sam checks out how the fishermen are doing on the river. Turns out
that the Chum salmon are thick, but very few Silvers or pinks are being caught.
Word is, the Silvers are on their way here. We decide to wait until morning to
try our luck.
