Sam And Saundra’s Second
Time Around – Part 63
Alaska
7/9/11- 8/3/11 Kenai
River, Homer
The Sockeye are running
and we are trying to catch them. Record runs. The limit goes from
three fish a day per person to six. We fish when we can. Sam and
Owen take two fifty pound boxes of frozen fish and clams home with them on the
plane, and we fill the freezer. Sam shares smokin’ fish info with Doug
and Sherry – they give him a lesson on how to can salmon. Wow! The
possibilities! We fish until we are so sore, even the fish oil in our
eyes can’t keep us going.

So we go halibut
fishing. Dennis and Judy had purchased an Alaska Coupon Book and even after
using a coupon for their own halibut trip, they had an extra. They gave it to
us. Big grins! Thanks Judy and Dennis! Two for one. A great deal!
We go. We catch our four halibut and make it back home with about 25
pounds of halibut fillets. Out of Homer. More weight would have been
appreciated– but we are happy to have had good weather. We inadvertently
booked our trip on one of the ‘super mega’ high to low tide days. Our
fish line was almost straight out from the side of the boat. Amazing
experience. Big boat, lots of people. Great views of the
volcanoes. Five of the halibuteers had ‘heads down’ early, but the
captain (estimated age about 12) and the crew (oldest may have been 16) made
sure that all left standing tall got their limit. If anyone was after a trophy
fish, they were disappointed. Sam and I had a good time. Caught our
own, then stayed out of the way and watched the sea, land, and people
scapes.
