Mini-Adventures – Searching For Big Cats
Another of our Yuma neighbors told us about fishing the
canals that cross the highway to Quartzsite.
So after preparation of poles and obtaining really obnoxious bait, off
we go to fish for flathead catfish in the canal. We turn right at the near side of the canal
where the road continues to a cement factory.
We get out our gear, including our camp chairs and fishing we do
go. About a half hour into the event,
Sam climbs back up to Brutus for a very good reason and I proceed to lose my
balance as I bend forward to play with my fishing line. Down I slide into the water. It felt like I
was being sucked in and I quickly panicked and sat down. I was able to stop my descent and inch myself
backwards. I was only wet from my waist
down, but I did get an adrenalin rush.
We continued to fish as the sun dried me out. After about two hours with no nibbles, we
decided to move on to the next adventure.
I packed up my gear and was at Brutus when I happen to look back and see
Sam climbing up out of the canal, soaking wet.
He had leaned over trying to cleanse his hand of stink bait, and
continued right on into the canal.
Luckily, although he felt the same sucking-in sensation, he was able to
pull himself out safely. With chuckles
and smiles galore, we return to Yuma.
Later that day we heard that two other fisherman had fallen
into the same canal at a different location.
They were unable to get out of the canal and were swept into the pipes
that went under a road, or some other obstacle.
Luckily, the canal was not totally full and they eventually were able to
get out safely. We will be much more
careful if we decide to try fishing the canals in the future. An adrenalin junkie I am not.
