Sam And Saundra's Year Long Adventure - Part 156

Sam And Saundra’s Year Long Adventure – Part 156
Alaska
7/16/09-8/8/09  - More fishing – Seward, Alaska

Seward, Alaska

Russ had set up a halibut-fishing trip for The Boys a long, long time ago.  We had arranged for Joe, Sam and I to go on the same trip, the same day, same time, same boat.  But it got messed up somehow.  Sam opted for the three of us to go the following day, so we could still all get on a trip.  Since the get up and get on the boat time was sooooo early in the morning and Sam and I have been on retirement time for a while (and no dark to give us clues), we opted to get a room and stay the night in Seward.  Seward is not very far from Soldotna, but with the roads, traffic, weather and all that, it was a good decision for us.  We were also able to greet The Boys as they came off their mixed salmon/halibut fishing trip.  The weather was horrid going there and visibility was next to zip.  Good thing is, I won’t bore you with more descriptions of beautiful, tall, glacier-filled mountains that will take your breath away.  Good thing.  The Boys all got their six Silver Salmon, but only Al got his two halibut. We went out and ate seafood for dinner and made it to the boat the next morning with minutes to spare.

Our Day's Catch, Minus Vampires

Our trip on the Puffin Charters, The Huntress fishing boat, was about as successful.  We each got our six Silvers, but due to high winds, yucky rain and big waves, we stayed in the protected area to fish for halibut.  Safe for people, but we caught skate (ugly!), vampire flounder (according to the captain) and a few Pacific Cod.  Only the pacific cod were not any good to eat.  The ‘Vampire Flounder’ have teeth – nasty teeth and were so prolific, that every time you brought your line up, one of them would be making it much heavier to reel in.  Joe was the only one in our party to catch a halibut.  He also caught and brought up to the surface at least 19 of the vampires, thereby making sure his arm muscles were strengthened.  No need for chin ups. : )
