Sam And Saundra's Year Long Adventure - Part 121

Sam And Saundra’s Year Long Adventure – Part 121
Canada
6/13/09 - Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada

Cutie

We got up slowly – but rushed breaking camp.  Sam read an interesting bit of info about the skeeters.  He said that the article claimed that a moose can sometimes lose a pint of blood a day to the skeeters.  No wonder they look strange. Poor things.  I think it was nice of Sam to give a poor moose a break.

Sparkly

We are on our way to Whitehorse.  We have already entered the Yukon, but we seemed to leave and enter it a couple more times before we stayed a while.  Rancherio River takes a turn to accompany the Alaskan Highway.  We cross the continental divide once again.  Rivers, lakes, creeks, mountains, lower mountains, hills, valleys, grass, bushes and trees all continue to find ways of making the drive seem short.  We do not see a lot of animals today.  They probably are sensing Sam’s extreme anxiety episodes that seem to start at the nape of his neck and run down his spine.  Nope, that’s is just the pre-scratching phase of his overall ‘skeeter-bite’ experience.

Part Of The Wild

The forests that we are seeing are mainly shades of olive green.  The various trees that make up the forests seem to change only slightly in the type of trees present.  They are much different from Oregon’s ‘big tree’ forests and Arizona’s ‘big cactus’ forests.  They have several kinds of evergreen and several kinds of broadleaf, mixed in with a lot of bush/brush/grass.  Fall must be gorgeous.  I wonder if the underbrush clears out in the winter?  Maybe I will remember these questions long enough to ask a native. Large, large lakes continue to make their presence known.  The scenery is just great.  We pass Teslin, Swan Lake and Lewes Dam, entering Whitehorse.  We find an RV park quite easily, set up and settle down for the evening. It was a calm day.  The days are getting much longer too.
