Sam And Saundra's Year Long Adventure - Part 85

Sam And Saundra’s Year Long Adventure – Part 85
Mexico
3/29/09 & 3/30/09 – San Carlos

San Carlos is larger than San Blas, but smaller than Mazatlan.  One of the main selling points in driving to San Carlos with an RV as compared to Mazatlan, is that you do not need the hologram (or import documents) to travel here from the states. The RV park is nice, but the pool that is advertised has been turned into a dirt pool.  Not too fun to use.  The water is across the street.  There are islands off shore here as well, but not developed like in Mazatlan.  I like the beaches a lot.  There are shells and beautiful rocks and sand on the beaches.  The water is a little cooler than further south.  We waded.  Sam is not sure of the swim quality of the beach areas, although swimming and snorkeling is advertised everywhere.  The fishing is supposed to be good, but we did not try and go.  The quaintness level is very high.  I start working on Sam to return, before we leave.  Good strategy, I hope.  I like the way we are treated here by the locals.  We look at the newer RV Park called the Miridor  RV Park (elmirador-rv@hotmail.com).  It has full hookups, swimming pool, gated security, wi-fi, tennis courts and the main thing – 30 amp.  The only thing is, you have to walk a long ways to a good flat beach access, or climb down (than up) to get to a beach.  The view of the striking mountains is great.

Other Direction

My problem with the food at this time, is that I am tired of seafood.  Seafood is the specialty here.  I reluctantly went out to one more restaurant that only served seafood and ordered shrimp poblano.  The shrimp were served in a green sauce that covered the whole plate.  It was one of the most delicious dishes I have had to date in Mexico.  I raved so much about it that others went for a later dinner for green shrimp and had the same response.  Besides beach combing (a full sack full for Sam and my pockets were stuffed), we waded and basked in the sun.  We went shopping at a cliff side artisan area. We went looking for a large shopping center, as we are scheduled to have a pot luck with our talent show.  We end up driving to Guaymas to a large shopping center.  Guaymas is actually pretty close, our mistake was that it is Sunday and that is the day the all the locals go shopping.  It was packed store to store, wall to wall, with only the ‘hiking-in’ parking spaces available.  After several hours we got out of the store, back on the road to San Carlos.  The striking vista of San Carlos just keeps striking.  It is beautiful.  I like it better than San Miguel.

Rock Hunting
Our time goes quickly and we have our pot luck and talent show.  The “band”, which is what we are called, falls flat-  laughing until tears come.  Hugh and Sam were to have played their drums.  Barbara and I in our best 60’s clothing, with head bands on – were to lip-sync Mama Mia.  Unfortunately neither we nor anyone else, could hear the music coming from the computer due to the traffic and general outdoors effect.  All of our attempts at humor with the song, including Sam and Hugh walking off together – was lost.  We listened to poem after poem, a sultry song sang by Janet that was her and Chucks favorite since their dating days, Chuck and Ajo did a dog biscuit trick, some jokes, some awards given (Sam got one for having the most transmission fluid), and a good time was had by everyone.  The show topper was a ‘CB radio’ skit put on by Klaus, Penny and Mike.  Written by Penny – It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen.  They caught so much of the problems, hilarity, personalities, quirks (including Tigger the cat) that we experienced during the trip.  Sam was the surprise guest into the skit.  He was the Federali-turned-agriculture inspector, who ended up leaving only after taking some of the wagon master’s valued oranges. We all laughed ourselves silly and some of us were having a hard time keeping back the tears, knowing it was coming to an end.  I don’t know where a group like this would be put together to live so closely, vie for space, be in learning mode, eat together, rely on each other and not be in boot camp.  A wonderful group.  The pot luck was great too.
