Sam And Saundra's Year Long Adventure - Part 43

Sam And Saundra’s Year Long Adventure – Part 43
Mexico
2/13/09 – Campeche

Sam and I decide to drive into Campeche and try shopping at the local Walmart.  Hugh and Barbara opt to go with us.  We leave the park, turn left and start climbing the hilly roads.  We go a few miles when I hear Sam and Hugh talk about pulling over to the side of the road, which is never easy in Mexico.  They finally spot a place on the other side of the road, in front of an old rusty gate, that is locked and does not look like it has been used in this millennium.  Turns out that Brutus has blown his turbo hose again and they work to get it clamped back on.  As they are working on it – a big, heavy-looking dump type truck starts honking.  It is stopped on the other side of the road with its blinkers on and the only place it could possibly want to go is into the road we have blocked.  I wave to the driver and get out to tell Sam.  He is able to move Brutus out of the way, the truck driver waves with his hand (our luck) and Sam and Hugh get back to work on Brutus.  They get it on – we get a little further – it comes off.  They work on it again.  Same thing.  We get to a Pemex station, where one of the gas attendants gets a wrench from his personal car.  They get the clamp back on.  We drive a little further.  Before we reach Campeche, there is a tiny town, Lerma, which is made up mostly of small weathered roadside buildings.  On one of them is a Cummins sign that indicates it has diesel parts.  We sit there stunned for at least two moments, then Sam pulls in.  Off Sam and Hugh go.  They come back with two new clamps (one for later) and get it on.  By the time Brutus is fully dressed and ready to go again, it is getting late in the afternoon.

We enter Campeche, taking note of a trolley that will take one on a tour all through the city.  We see big block thing-a-ma-bobbies, criss-crossing in the water line.  The city has a boardwalkway kinda thing.  We glance.  Seller selling stuff, music coming from somewhere.  Sam drives around and we find the Walmart.  In we go and enthralled we are.  Just enough different to make me think of the Twilight Zone. We leave Walmart – finally (Sam says) and run into the bank that Hugh and Barbara need.  We are too late for meeting up with the rest of the group to tour the seven fortresses and the wall called ‘La Puerta de Tierra, or to meet for lunch at one of Dave’s favorite eateries.  We return back to camp, thankful that Brutus only lost a clamp.

Campeche

Sam and I swim at the man-made beach at the RV park. It was nice. We enjoyed it.  We go back to camp and pre-pack for tomorrow’s travel day.
