Sam And Saundra's Year Long Adventure - Part 26

Sam And Saundra’s Year Long Adventure – Part 26 01/16/09  Pharr  - The Road To Texas  ‘Hold On’!!

We left Tucson heading southeast on I-10 and away we soar…  We did not stop at Benson or Wilcox (where the Cranes had just landed, ending another memorable migration). We zoomed by the Cochise Visitor’s Center, The Thing and the Chirichua Regional Museum.  (Since we did not stop, I do not know what The Thing is, but it did have a nice colorful warehouse-like building to live in.)

Rest Stop For Many

Around Sulfur Springs we heard: “Well, I don’ rightly know jes wha happent. Everthin jes stopt. Tell ya it was plain odd.”  (You may want to re-read this part and get used to the strong country cowboy gee gaw.)  “Mah wife (note he was politically correct and did not call her ‘ball and chain’, ‘woman’ or something worse) was in mah truck an she starts laughin and purdy soon the har on mah neck and the har on mah wife’s neck jus stans up on end. Sceerd us purdy good.  Donnoh, but think it twere on of them Ail..lee..ins!”  A second trucker commiserated with the first in the same language patterns, indicating that he “twernt sure attawl, but things were seen in that part of the country pertnear awl the time”.  A third trucker sounded up and said that he saw a program of a psychological-type person who talked to a bunch of those people who saw weird things and she thought those people needed mental help.

Sam and I roared – he had turned on the CB radio (we were required to have for the Mexico caravan trip) to test it out and this conversation immediately came through, loud and clear.  The first two truckers did not even seem to understand that the third had called them nuts, and the conversation went on for some time.  It abruptly quit and Sam turned it off.  A little later he turned it back on, only to getting another man talking in an oriental-sounding language.  We left it off after that.
